How I Do Business

The words “All flash, no substance” have never been said about me. Truth be told, I’ve been known to do a few business meetings in sweatpants. The other guys can keep up appearances with fancy offices and company hoodies.

I’m all about doing the work and helping clients win. That’s a lesson I learned as a 22-year-old lowly campaign staffer for an underfunded state House race. I kept my head down, listened to political veterans and put in more hours than anyone else. I also learned the value of loyalty.

I still approach every race the same way. You’ve got to put in the time to win. And I’m not about to let my clients down. I think that’s one reason why I have one of the best win records in Michigan politics today.

Since going out on my own three years ago, I’ve been approached to expand and bring on other consultants or join bigger firms. That’s something I’m just not interested in.

It’s important to me to work personally with candidates on their races and groups on their issues. I want to get to know you and your goals. I don’t want to take on more work than I can handle and pass off clients to associates or contractors. That wouldn’t be fair to you.

Politics is about personal relationships. There’s just no substitute for that. You can’t cut corners and that’s not what I’m about. I’m a workhorse, not a showhorse.

I will always give you an honest evaluation of your chances of victory and what you need to do achieve it. I’m not here to waste your time or money. You want to win and so do I. I’m not interested in stringing you along for a paycheck. That’s not fair to you.

I’m also not afraid to speak my mind. I’ve made a few enemies of people I’ve defeated, which comes with the territory. If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen me involved in a few flame wars. My wife says I don’t suffer fools gladly, which is a nice way of saying I don’t take a lot of crap.

But the truth is that I battle even harder for my clients. There’s nothing I like more than helping people win their elections and their issues. When you hire Joe DiSano, you get a fighter. I gladly take the hits for my clients.

You’ll also get a clear-headed strategist. After more than two decades in politics, I know when not to throw a punch –– which is often more important. I know which attacks to answer and how to do so.

And I know how to reach voters on a visceral level with messaging, social media campaigns and ads that they respond to and remember.

Previous clients of mine include Harry Reid’s Senate Majority PAC, the Michigan Democratic Party, Progress Michigan, Planned Parenthood of Michigan, Michigan AFL-CIO, Environmental Defense Fund, the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, Operating Engineers Local 324, 2013 Sterling Heights police millage campaign, Wayne County Judge Kandrevas, Warren Mayor Jim Fouts, Ecology Center, Macomb County Probate Judge Carl Marlinga, State Senator Curtis Hertel Jr., State Representative Kristy Pagan, State Senator Steve Bieda, and the successful recall campaign of GOP State Representative Paul Scott.

I’ve done grasstops and grassroots health care campaigns on behalf of Direct Impact, Advocacy Group, Nuclear Energy Institute and other leaders in the grassroots advocacy field. He did work for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 2009, helping lower-income and minority households prepare for the transition to digital television.

In 2015, I directed the defeat of incumbent Warren Treasurer Carolyn Moceri and the election of her replacement, Lorie Barnwell. In addition, I successfully returned every member of the Sterling Heights City Council to office, including the first election of Mayor Michael Taylor.

2016 found DiSano Strategies electing members of the legislature, judiciary as well as multiple successful independent expenditure campaigns.
